Paul and Mick have been training hard two days a week to build up their fitness for the Banish the Black Dog Ride at the end of May.
Townsville Tandems started the year on Saturday with Mick and I riding to Pallarenda doing the circuit twice. We rode about 20km with great weather. On Sunday a new stoker began learning the ropes. The next ride will be on the Saturday 14th February at 7.45am and Sunday 15th February 4.30pm. If you are interested contact us on [email protected]. Cheers Paul Townsville Tandems last ride for 2014 starting from Belgian Gardens to Pallarenda. We enjoyed the fresh sea breeze and bumpy bridges. After the ride we all said a sad farewell to Phil and Janice the inspiring couple who founded Townsville Tandems. Next year we will continue their cycling dreams with regular tandem rides around Townsville.
We had a fantastic ride this morning with Colin, Rowena and Mick on the backs, and Paul, Raven and Phil on the fronts. A nice roll up the river with a coffee stop at Cbar. Can't wait to do it all again!
Great news! Townsville Tandems has been nominated to participate in the Grill’d Local Matters donation program at Grill'd Townsville this month.
Every month, Grill’d donates $500 to local groups and asks their customers to decide who the money goes to. When customers buy a burger, they will receive a token to put into one of 3 jars representing different groups. Whoever has the most tokens at the end of the month receives $300. The other two groups receive $100 each. Spread the word, and head on down to Grill'd Townsville on Palmer Street, to help us keep riding! Townsville Tandems celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday with our first ride!
We had all 3 bikes out on Saturday morning, with 3 captains (Phil, Paul and Bina), 4 Stokers (Rowena, Colin, Paul and Mick) and our team mascot, Faith the guide dog. We met at Rossiter Park and enjoyed a leisurely cruise around the river. Paul pushed out a solid 5km and Rowena, Colin and Mick just couldn't get enough as they pedalled a very impressive 10km! Well done to all our Stokers and Captains - it sure looked like you had a fun day. Hopefully this is the first of many great rides to come! We've started running training rides for our new captains to get them used to riding a tandem. The training covers all the things that you need to know before riding with a Stoker.
If you're keen to be involved with Townsville Tandems as a captain, then get in touch with Phil to arrange a time for your captain training ride. We're excited to announce that Townsville Tandems have just been offered the use of two Pegasus Brumby tandem bikes, owned by the Townsville office of the Sporting Wheelies & Disabled Association.
This brings the total number of bikes available to 3, making it possible for Townsville Tandems to begin running organised rides sooner. Today marks the launch of a brand new initiative called Townsville Tandems. The hope is that Townsville Tandems will grow into a club which is able to provide regular opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in the sport of cycling.
The Launch campaign will begin by gathering expressions of interest from people with a disability in the Townsville community. Once we have enough people who are interested in the concept, we can move on to the next stage of the Launch Campaign. For more info, visit the Launch Campaign page. |
